Halfguard Passing

Overview:

Class 12 Halfguard Passing

Warmups: Sitouts. 4 point sitout drill. High tripod on elbows to sitouts. Backstep reverse sitouts.

*Part 1 - Farside underhook smash pass (XX:25)*

Part 1.1: Farside underhook smash pass (basic version)

  1. Starting upright in top halfguard.

  2. Secure head control with farside underhook and crossface with gable grip.

  3. Tripod up on elbows with feet wide apart for balance.

  4. Walk feet in an arc to the side to get opponents bottom knee towards the ground.

  5. Place knee on the ground in front of their thigh, whilst lightly resting your hip on their belly.

  6. If foot trapped, then use other foot to free; slide over to side control.

*Part 1.2: Farside underhook smash pass (preventing closed guard)

  1. Starting upright in top halfguard.

  2. Secure head control with farside underhook and crossface with gable grip.

  3. Tripod up on elbows with narrow feet to block their knee from guard retention.

  4. Walk feet in an arc to the side to get opponents bottom knee towards the ground.

  5. Place knee on the ground in front of their thigh, whilst lightly resting your hip on their belly.

  6. If foot trapped, then use other foot to free; slide over to side control.

  7. Walk butt backwards against their thigh to point knees in opposite direction finishing with knee under their thighs.

*Part 2 - Reverse underhook switchbase pass (XX:45)*

Part 2.1: Reverse underhook switchbase to mount.

  1. Starting upright in top halfguard.

  2. Place elbow on ground in front of opponents elbow by swtiching base.

  3. Slide elbow up high into their armpit (farside) while sliding your butt up into their nearside armpit.

  4. Walk foot close to their butt so knee is pointing vertical.

  5. Frame their thigh with hand and drive knee to 3/4 mount.

  6. With hands at 10-2, assume loose grip on ankle and pummel ankle under thigh for full mount.

Part 2.2: Reverse underhook switchbase to 3/4 mount, smash pass to side control.

  1. Starting upright in top halfguard.

  2. Place elbow on ground in front of opponents elbow by swtiching base.

  3. Slide elbow up high into their armpit (farside) while sliding your butt up into their nearside armpit.

  4. Walk foot close to their butt so knee is pointing vertical.

  5. Frame their thigh with hand and drive knee to 3/4 mount with hands at 10-2.

  6. Ankle trapped, so switch back to underhook/crossface gable grip. (Part 1)

  7. Tripod up on elbows.

  8. Walk in arc to the side.

  9. Kneecut to side control.

*Part 2.3: Using butterfly mount to free ankle from 3/4 mount.

  1. Starting from 3/4 mount, hands at 10-2 (Step 4, Part 2.2)

  2. Place shin of the loose leg inside opponents thigh.

  3. Using hands for balance, use shins to get both their hips flat on the mat.

  4. Pummel both ankles over and under thighs for full mount.

Situational:

  • Starting upright in top halfguard.

  • A-person (bottom) wins by:

    • Getting to closed guard

    • Securing underhook and legscoop for 5 seconds

  • B-person (top) wins by passing to side control or mount
